A GROUP of Penweddig sixth-formers have set up a business selling natural beeswax products from scratch with only £10.
Four business students, Rhys Hughes, 17, Hannah Bailey, Mairead Jones, and Elin Davies, all 16 and from the Aberystwyth area, started a business called The Bee’s Knees which sells candles and lip balm made from natural beeswax sourced from a bee farm in Trefenter.
The group hopes to win a national secondary schools entrepreneurial competition called The Tenner Challenge UK, which challenges students to develop a successful business with only £10.
“The idea behind it is to make as much money from it as we can,” said Rhys.
“The business we set up is called The Bee’s Knee’s, and we use beeswax to create candles and lib balms. The ingredients are all natural and are all sourced locally.”
With the lip balms professionally presented in small metal containers and attractive card sleeves, and the candles poured into old teacups, the group is already seeing interest in their products grow.
Rhys added: “It is going really well so far. We have got some selling in shops in town and we have advertised on our Facebook page, which has got over 100 likes in the first week. We have sold 42 lip balms and 10 candles so far.
“People can buy our products from Cletwr in Tre’r-ddol but we are working on getting them into other shops."
