FORMER Welsh rugby stars are to feature in a charity match in Aberystwyth at the end of the month in memory of Eifion Gwynne.
‘Diwrnod Eifion’, or Eifion’s Day, will take place at Aberystwyth Rugby Club, Plascrug, on Bank Holiday Sunday, 28 May, featuring a rugby match between an Eifion Gwynne XV and a Welsh Legends XV, concerts from Meic Stevens and #band6, and an auction.
The death of Eifion, 41, a hugely popular father-of-three who died in Spain on 22 October last year after being struck by a car, left Aberystwyth, Llandovery and the Welsh rugby world in a state of shock.
Eifion played rugby for Aberystwyth and Llandovery rugby clubs for over two decades, and was named man of the match in Llandovery’s famous victory in the 2007 Konica Minolta Cup final, which was played at the Millennium Stadium, now the Principality Stadium.
Among the players confirmed to play for Wales Legends XV in the memorial rugby game are Lee Byrne, Gareth Cooper, John Davies, Dafydd Jones, with more to be announced.
The Eifion Gwynne XV will be made up of former teammates at Aberystwyth and Llandovery rugby clubs.
All proceeds from Diwrnod Eifion will go to the Cronfa Goffa Eifion Gwynne Memorial Fund.
